Supporting Early Education Literacy: Read for the Record

Hello Kiddies, Parents/Caregivers, and Teachers!

I wanted to share this wonderful event with you all. Several years ago, in downtown Chicago, I had the pleasure of volunteering for Jumpstart, at their community reading event. I never forgot my experience. In fact, it was made more memorable by the fact that I also had the pleasure of meeting one of my favorite-basketball-player's-mother, Deloris Jordan, she was gracious, engaging, and very kind. The James R. Jordan Foundation (JRJF) was a sponsoring partner in the literacy event. It was obvious to me that Mrs. Jordan is very involved in JRJF, an organization that does so much for children as well.

I was introduced to Jumpstart through a good friend, who was a College Team Leader, at the time. Since then, I have loved their mission of furthering the cause of preparing pre-school age children for Kindergarten; by providing early childhood programs that consist of language, literacy, and social-emotional programming, especially in under-resourced communities.

Jumpstart celebrates 25 years of their vision & mission this year. The collaborative nature and leveraging of relationships with other organizations and local colleges and universities, has allowed Jumpstart to thrive, and implement similar programs in 14 States and the District of Columbia.

One of their most popular annual events is Jumpstart’s Read for the Record event. It draws millions of children and adults from around the world, with the aim to read the same book on the same day! This year Read for the Record will take place on October 29, 2020. The event tries to encourage and bring awareness to the importance of early-childhood literacy and also support high-quality children's literature.

The book chosen for Read for the Record is by NY Times Best Selling and Newbery Medalist Author, Meg Medina, and the book is "Evelyn Del Rey Is Moving Away". A special story about friendship.

I hope you get to participate in this wonderful event, to help further and celebrate early-education literacy!
