Food Allergens and Food Sensitivity/Food Intolerance are not the same!
Food Allergens can cause life-threatening reactions. They are Immune Reactions (you have probably heard about your immunity a lot during this time). The immune system is how our body protects us from bad germs, harmful bacteria, and harmful viruses, something we will learn in detail later-on.
When your friend or a person with a food allergy eats/or sometimes even touches, or is around a food product being cooked, a food product or a dish that contains certain foods, their body recognizes that particular food, and they can have a harmful and even deadly reaction.
These are only some of the severe reactions to a food allergen. There are more and they can be different in each person. One of the deadliest reactions is Anaphylaxis Shock, which is a whole body reaction. When swelling and other body reactions caused by the immune response, closes off the ability to breath, causes dangerously low blood pressure, and an abnormal heart rate. Many of your friends with food allergies are aware of their allergies. Always ask and listen.
Ways you can help recognize Food Allergen Reactions:
1.) Always Ask
2.) Your friend may be wearing a bracelet
3.) Look for the Teal Pumpkins or Teal Labels on Food Items while Halloween Trick-or-Treating

Nutrition Through the Lifespan
Hello Kiddies, Parents, Caregivers, and Teachers!
Nutrition can be confusing and there is so much conflicting information out in the public. KiddieHab's goals are to provide a source of accurate knowledge and evidence-based information, quality tools, and sensible strategies!
The goals of proper nutrition and healthy eating in childhood and adolescence are to support proper growth and development. Healthy eating is meant to meet energy needs for activity and life-sustaining processes, while also preventing various adverse health conditions.
According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015-2020 a healthy diet for childhood and adolescent should include:
-
A variety of fruits and vegetables.
-
Whole grains.
-
A variety of protein foods.
-
Oils.
-
Dairy (or other replacement source if food-sensitive or allergic)
Nutritional needs will change through the life span, and should account for
level of activity (check out Kiddie Athlete) and meet growth and development
needs. Nutrition and Healthy eating are always changing along with us.
In this section, we will discuss normal growth and development, at each
stage of life, and the required nutritional needs at that stage of development.
We will also discuss recognizing healthy foods and making healthier choices.
In KiddieHab world, there are no "good" foods or "bad" foods. We learn and talk
about food that:
-helps us grow
-make us become stronger
-make us stay healthier (less sickness or recover faster)
-gives us energy
-develops healthy eating habits and better strategies through our life.
